Customized music.

Minimal announcements.

For one of Brooklyn's coolest venues.

If you've already locked in 501 Union for your wedding, you've made a great call. The space is genuinely one of a kind. A 1916 auto restoration shop turned industrial chic event venue, it sits at the crossroads of five Brooklyn neighborhoods and has this rare quality of feeling both raw and refined at the same time.

But here's the thing: a venue this distinctive needs a DJ who actually understands it. Not just someone who shows up with speakers and a laptop.

We're Non-Traditional Wedding DJs, an NYC-based team of DJs who have worked in venues like 501 Union all over the city. Our whole thing is customized music and minimal announcements. We're not here to hype up your guests or play the same setlist every DJ in Brooklyn has been recycling since 2018. We're here to make your night sound like you.

Here's everything you need to know about hiring a DJ for your 501 Union wedding.

What Makes 501 Union Unique as a Wedding Venue?

Your celebration at 501 Union unfolds across three distinct spaces: an Art Deco inspired lounge for cocktail hour, a glass enclosed atrium for ceremonies, and a light filled reception hall for dinner and dancing.

Originally built in 1916, 501 Union was once a hub for classic car restoration before being reimagined in 2013 as one of Brooklyn's most sought after event venues, blending historical character with modern design elements including exposed brick, handcrafted chandeliers, and a dramatic skylight that fills the space with natural light.

What this means practically for your DJ setup: you're not working in a cookie cutter ballroom. You have high ceilings, hard surfaces (brick, tin, concrete), and three separate areas that all need sound coverage at different points of your wedding.

The Three Spaces at 501 Union and What They Mean for Sound

The Cocktail Lounge is the Art Deco inspired room where guests gather for cocktail hour after the ceremony. It's a more intimate space, which means you want warm, mid volume music that fills the room without overwhelming conversation. This is where great cocktail hour curation really shines.

The Covered Atrium is used for ceremonies. It seats 144 guests for a wedding ceremony. It has beautiful high ceilings and a great aesthetic. During the reception, some couples choose to have an ice cream truck drive in here to serve dessert to their guests.

The Reception Hall is where the night comes alive. Fully seated dinners with a dance floor typically accommodate between 140 and 160 guests depending on furniture and layout choices. The vaulted skylight running the length of the room looks incredible.

Why Do Couples Book Non-Traditional Wedding DJs for 501 Union?

Most couples who come to us have already interviewed a few DJs and felt something was off. Either the DJ was too focused on performing as an entertainer (lots of mic hype, lots of talking), or the music felt generic, like a Spotify "wedding reception" playlist that no one asked for.

501 Union attracts couples who chose a venue that's anything but generic. They want their DJ to match that energy.

Here's what we bring to the table:

Customized Music

Your DJ will actually ask you what you listen to at home. What genres you love. What era of music feels like you. Then they build a set that reflects that, not what worked at last week's wedding.

You can share a playlist, give us a mood board of artists, or just describe the vibe in plain language. We take that and build something that feels personal because it is.

Minimal Announcements

Once the dancing starts, your DJ puts the mic down. No "everyone get on the dance floor!" No "let me hear you make some noise!" No cringe.

We handle the functional stuff: introductions, telling guests where to go, cuing speeches. But we don't perform. The night is about you and your guests, not about the DJ.

DJs Who Actually Mix

No dead air. No awkward pauses between songs. Your DJ blends tracks together and reads the room in real time, adjusting the energy based on what's actually happening on the dance floor.

Which Non-Traditional DJs Are Available for 501 Union Weddings?

We're a NYC-based team with DJs spread across the city and surrounding areas. Several of our DJs are Brooklyn-based and know venues like 501 Union well. When you reach out to us, we'll let you know exactly which DJs are available for your date and give you the chance to meet them before booking.

Almost every couple meets their DJ on a Zoom call before committing. That's just how we do it.

What Is the DJ Setup Process at 501 Union?

Here's how we typically approach it:

  1. Load-in and setup: We arrive early to set up all three audio zones before guests arrive. You'll never see us scrambling with cables when cocktail hour starts.

  2. Sound check: We check levels in each space before the event begins, accounting for the acoustic properties of each room.

  3. Music Worksheet review: A few weeks before your wedding, you and your DJ will jump on a final Zoom call to go over your Google Doc music worksheet together, confirm the timeline, and handle any last minute changes.

  4. Day-of communication: Your DJ stays in sync with your coordinator and other vendors to make sure transitions between ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception all flow naturally.

One note on logistics: 501 Union does not have a parking lot, but occasionally there is non-metered street parking available on the streets surrounding the venue. There is also a QuikPark garage located at 365 Bond Street, approximately a four minute walk from the venue. We plan around this as part of our standard load-in process.

What Kind of Music Works Best at 501 Union?

Honestly, anything works at 501 Union because the venue has no particular "vibe" it forces on you. It's flexible. What matters is that the music feels like your wedding.

That said, the space has no dress code when it comes to music. We've seen 501 Union work beautifully for everything from indie and house to cumbia, Bollywood, hip hop, and classic soul. The acoustics and the aesthetic are flexible enough to hold whatever you bring to it.

What matters is that it sounds like you, not like a generic Brooklyn wedding.

Our DJs have backgrounds in everything from rave culture to metal bands, drum and bass, radio, and record collecting. Whatever your taste, we have someone who actually loves that music.

How Far in Advance Should You Book a DJ for 501 Union?

501 Union is a popular venue and books up fast, especially for Saturdays in the spring and fall. The same goes for DJs.

General guidelines:

  • Saturday in May, June, September, or October: Book your DJ at least a year in advance

  • Saturday in other months: Six to eight months is usually fine

  • Off peak days or weekdays: Three to six months typically works

The earlier you book, the better your selection of DJs. If you wait until three months out for a peak Saturday, you may be choosing from whoever is still available rather than whoever is the best fit for your vision.

How Much Does a DJ Cost for a 501 Union Wedding?

Our pricing is straightforward. Because 501 Union is in Brooklyn, most of our DJs are either local or a short trip away.

NYC based DJs are priced at $2,950 for a standard wedding package, which includes ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. There is no travel fee for Brooklyn weddings.

Your package includes:

  • Up to three separate sound systems for ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception

  • Full planning support through our music worksheet process

  • A discovery Zoom call before booking

  • A final planning Zoom call a few weeks before your wedding

  • Day of DJ services with full setup and breakdown

FAQs: 501 Union Wedding DJs

Do you have experience with industrial venues like 501 Union?

Yes. Our DJs regularly work in industrial and non-traditional spaces throughout NYC, including venues with high ceilings, hard reflective surfaces, and multi-room layouts. We understand how to manage sound in these environments and come prepared with the right equipment and approach.

Does a DJ cover the ceremony and cocktail hour or just the reception?

All three are included in the price. We bring separate sound systems for each space so that each part of your wedding sounds exactly right, without any scrambling or repurposing of equipment mid-event.

Can we choose our own playlist?

Yes. You can choose all of it, some of it, or give us general direction and let the DJ take it from there. Most couples land somewhere in between: a few anchoring songs or artists they love, with the DJ filling in around that.

Will the DJ talk a lot?

No. Our DJs make the announcements your wedding actually needs: introductions, cueing speeches, directing guests. Once dancing starts, the mic goes away. The focus is on the music and the dance floor, not on the DJ.

Can we meet our DJ before booking?

Yes, and we encourage it. Almost every couple meets their DJ on a Zoom call before committing. You should feel good about who you're hiring before you sign anything.

What happens if something goes wrong with our DJ?

We send a replacement DJ of equal quality at the same terms and price. All of our DJs are insured and we take backup planning seriously.

How does the planning process work?

After you book, we send you a Google Doc music worksheet where you share your preferences, must plays, and anything you want to avoid. A few weeks before your wedding, you and your DJ jump on a final planning Zoom call to go through it together and finalize the timeline.
